What is mediation?

  • Mediation is a process for resolving disputes through discussion with the help of a neutral person, the mediator. The aim is to reach a solution which both parties feel is fair.
  • In some cases mediation is an alternative to a court hearing. Judges refer cases when they believe that mediation can produce the best solution.
  • Mediation begins with each party telling a panel of 2 or 3 mediators about the situation.
  • Mediators then guide you in a discussion of possible solutions and areas of agreement. The mediators help you decide for yourselves how to resolve the problem.
  • When you resolve your dispute you will sign an agreement which indicates your commitment to live up to your part of the solution
