RESTORATIVE PRACTICES

Restorative Practices focus on repairing harm done to people and relationships. The underlying principle is that human beings are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes in their behavior when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them.

Conferencing Circles are one application of restorative practices that can be used in neighborhoods, schools, and with families to deal with harm that has been done or to help people make decisions.

Family Group Conferencing Circles involve anyone affected by wrongdoing which may include victim and offender family members or other community members. The goal of the conference is to identify who has been affected, how the incident has affected them, and what steps need to be taken to make things right.

Family Group Decision Making provides a space for immediate and extended family members, supportive family friends, advocates, and social service professionals to find healthy, integrated ways of meeting a specific goal, often regarding the welfare of a child. The process allows for the wisdom and the resources of the family to decide how best to move forward.
